The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPRM) in 2010 that solicited input on possible regulatory approaches to reducing the number of blade contact injuries associated with consumer use of table saws. Econometrica reviewed and critiqued the CPSC estimates of annual injuries and social costs associated with these injuries. Based on an extensive analysis of the CPSC injury estimation and cost methodologies, Econometrica developed alternative estimates of injuries and injury costs that were used to support the comments the Power Tool Institute submitted in response to the ANPRM.
