Econometrica to Research Ways to Improve Transit Workers’ Health and Safety
The Transportation Research Board awarded Econometrica a contract to research ways to improve the health and safety of transit workers and save costs
Bethesda, MD, October 2017
Econometrica, Inc., was recently awarded a contract by the Transportation Research Board (TRB) to develop a plan to improve the health and safety of transit workers. Under TRB, a branch of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, Econometrica will research ways to improve the health and safety of transportation workers and save costs for many transit agencies.
Research shows that transit workers experience health problems due to the physical demands of their jobs and work environments. These general health problems lead to more absences, early retirement, healthcare costs, and hiring costs. These factors impact the budgets of transit agencies.
“This is the first time Econometrica will work with the TRB, and we look forward to forging a lasting relationship with them. Health is an important issue that affects all market areas, and Econometrica has extensive experience researching health policies,” said Cyrus Baghelai, Econometrica’s President and CEO.
By improving the health and safety of transit workers, transit agencies can save costs by keeping healthy employees in the workforce longer and reducing absenteeism and sickness. Econometrica will evaluate the effectiveness of health promotion and wellness programs by conducting cost–benefit analyses of programs at transit agencies. The analyses will measure the programs’ benefits, including savings from reduced absenteeism, turnover, and workers’ compensation payments, against their costs. This will help identify programs that produce positive bottom-line effects for the fiscal health of transit agencies and the health of transit workers.
While this is Econometrica’s first contract with TRB, Econometrica has previously conducted research with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
